If you’re pregnant or have a baby under 12 months old and you’re covered by an Anthem health plan, you may qualify for free virtual lactation consultations through Anthem’s Building Healthy Families program. Nurturing Lactation Care is part of this program, and this guide walks you through exactly how it works and how to enroll.
Who Qualifies
You may be eligible if:
- You have an Anthem health plan (check your insurance card — this benefit applies specifically to Anthem plans, not every Blue Cross Blue Shield plan)
- You are currently pregnant, OR
- You are within 12 months postpartum, OR
- You have a baby under 12 months old
Not every Anthem plan includes this benefit. Employer-sponsored plans vary, so the only way to know for sure is to have your eligibility checked — which we’re happy to do for you.
What’s Covered
- Up to 2 prenatal visits
- Up to 6 postpartum visits
- $0 cost to you — no copay, no deductible applied
- Visits are conducted virtually, by video
How to Enroll: Step by Step
1. Contact our office.
Call or text (478) 288-8784, or book online at nurturinglc.com, and let us know you’d like to use your Anthem benefit.
2. We check your eligibility.
Our office verifies your Anthem eligibility for you — you don’t need to fill anything out yourself for this step.
3. We let you know you’re eligible.
Once confirmed, we’ll reach out with the next step, which you’ll need to complete yourself.
4. Enroll in Building Healthy Families using your own Anthem account.
This step has to be completed by you, under your own login — not a spouse’s or partner’s account, even if you’re on the same family plan.
Visit: wfh.wildflowerhealth.com/anthembuildinghealthyfamilies
- On your phone: Choose Sydney Health.
- On your computer: Choose Anthem.com.
5. Get logged in.
- Download and open the Sydney Health app (phone) or go to Anthem.com (computer).
- Every family member needs their own individual login — if you’re logged into someone else’s account, go to Menu, scroll to the bottom, and select Sign Out, then choose “Use another account” to log in with your own information.
- Check the name at the top of the home page. If it’s yours, you’re ready to continue.
6. Find Building Healthy Families.
- Tap the Menu tab (bottom right).
- Select My Health Dashboard.
- Scroll to the Building Healthy Families tile and select it.
- Tap the Building Healthy Families button.
7. Confirm you’ve arrived.
When you reach the “Welcome” page, you’re officially enrolled.
⚠️ Important: Do not click any button labeled “Lactation” inside the app. That button will not connect you to our practice — it routes to a different provider. Once you’ve reached the Welcome page, stop there.
8. Watch for a confirmation email, then schedule your visit.
Once enrollment is complete, reach back out to our office and we’ll get you scheduled with Leia Giddens, IBCLC, or Rebecca Foley, RN, IBCLC.
If You Don’t Pass Eligibility
Not every Anthem cardholder qualifies, and that’s usually one of a few things:
- Double-check your card. This benefit is for Anthem plans specifically — some Blue Cross Blue Shield cards are not Anthem plans, even though they look similar.
- Your employer’s plan may not include this benefit. Some employer-sponsored plans choose which wellness benefits to include, and this one isn’t part of every plan.
- If your card clearly says Anthem and you still don’t pass, contact us — sometimes it’s a simple typo (like a letter O instead of a zero) on a form, and we can help sort it out.
A Few Important Details
- Visits under this benefit are conducted virtually, by video. If an in-home or office visit would work better for your family, just mention it when you reach out — we’re happy to talk through your options.
- You cannot use this benefit for a virtual visit on the same day you’ve had an in-person visit with us.
- After each virtual consultation, Anthem may send you a short satisfaction survey. We’d appreciate you filling it out — it helps keep this benefit available for other families.
