From Struggles to Success: Why I Became a Lactation Consultant
Eight years ago, when I gave birth to my baby boy, I had a strong desire to breastfeed. Like so many new mothers, I was filled with excitement and anticipation. But what I didn’t expect was the overwhelming fear that came with breastfeeding. I constantly worried about whether he was getting enough milk, and every nursing session was painful. I found myself lying awake in bed at night, searching for answers. But the more I searched, the more I felt lost in a chaotic and emotionally charged space. Despite my best efforts, we switched to formula feeding when he was just two months old, and I felt a sense of relief.
Fast forward to February 2022, when my baby girl was born. This time, I felt a little more prepared for the challenges of breastfeeding, but we still encountered feeding difficulties. My baby struggled with slow weight gain during her first month, and once again, I felt a knot in my stomach. I feared I wouldn’t be able to breastfeed her either. But there was something deep within me—an instinct, a primal urge—that made me want to nurse her, no matter what.
Thankfully, I had the support of a wonderful lactation consultant in Rochester, NY, Dianne Cassidy, who was able to see us for a telehealth appointment at 7:30 one particularly stressful evening. My husband Joey held the phone while Dianne assessed my baby and me, and it was a turning point. That appointment helped us overcome the initial challenges we faced, and with the support of our care team, including Children’s Healthcare of Sandersville, we found our rhythm. It was then that I realized that I wanted to become a lactation consultant too.
At the same time, I saw many mothers around me struggling with a severe formula shortage. While I was thankful that we weren’t dependent on formula, I was deeply disturbed by the way formula-feeding mothers were being treated. The solution is not as simple as “just breastfeed.” It’s critical to recognize the broader context and challenges that prevent mothers from breastfeeding successfully.
The truth is, while many women try to breastfeed, two-thirds of them do not meet the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines of exclusively breastfeeding for the first six months. It’s easy for people to place blame on the mothers for not “trying hard enough.” But this oversimplification ignores the lack of postpartum support, the scarcity of evidence-based lactation knowledge in the medical community, and the many societal barriers that make breastfeeding difficult.
I believe the solution is not to point fingers but to provide more education, more support, and more resources. This is the driving force behind the creation of Nurturing Lactation Care. Through my practice, I aim to help mothers navigate the challenges of breastfeeding and provide them with the support and guidance they need to succeed.
I am grateful to God for guiding me along this path, to my husband for always being by my side, and to my parents for their constant prayers and encouragement. My children have reminded me of what truly matters, and I am thankful for their love and inspiration. I also want to express my deep gratitude to Lisa McDonald for sharing her space at Sandersville Drug Co., Katherine Morrison of Atlanta Lactation for taking me under her wing and being the mentor of my dreams, and to all of you who support me in this journey. Your love and encouragement mean the world to me.
