“Is Something Wrong With My Milk?”

Why It’s Usually a Milk Supply or Transfer Issue — Not Composition

As a lactation consultant serving families across Middle Georgia, I often hear a question that sounds like this:

“Is my milk too thin?”
“Does my milk have enough fat?”
“Could there be something wrong with my milk?”

Is something wrong with my breast milk? Probably not.

This idea — that there’s something wrong with a mother’s milk itself — is a deeply rooted myth. I hear it not just from exhausted parents, but also from well-meaning friends, relatives, and even healthcare professionals. And it’s time we clear the air.

Your Milk Is Almost Always “Good Enough”

In nearly all cases, breast milk composition is not the problem. Your body is designed to produce milk that perfectly matches your baby’s needs — and it does so with incredible precision.

Yes, milk composition can vary throughout a feeding (hello, foremilk and hindmilk), but your milk is biologically tailored to your baby. It has the right fats, calories, and nutrients.

So if a baby isn’t gaining weight well, is fussy after feeding, or seems constantly hungry, the issue is very rarely something being wrong with the milk itself.

It’s About Milk Intake: Supply or Transfer

Most feeding challenges come down to one of two things:

  1. Not Enough Milk Being Made
Some mothers aren’t producing enough milk due to factors like hormonal conditions, infrequent feedings, ineffective latch, breast hypoplasia, or previous breast surgeries.
  2. Baby Can’t Remove the Milk Well
Even if mom is making plenty of milk, the baby may struggle to get it out. Tongue tie, shallow latch, low muscle tone, or sleepy behavior at the breast (think jaundice, sedation from birth interventions, and energy conservation) can all play a role.

Bonus factor: If you’re pumping, your breast pump might not be removing milk effectively. Not all pumps are created equal, and poor flange fit or suction settings can sabotage even the best intentions.

This Is Why a Lactation Visit Matters

Seeing a lactation consultant is one of the best ways to get to the root cause of a feeding issue. At Nurturing Lactation Care, we take time to observe how your baby latches, how well they’re transferring milk, and how your body is responding.

Every family is different — and we create a personalized, strategic care plan just for you.

Most of the time, the solution isn’t to question your milk — it’s to help your baby get more of it.

Let’s Drop the “Low-Calorie Milk” Myth

If someone tells you that your milk is “low fat” or “not rich enough,” take a deep breath. That myth is outdated and oversimplified. Your milk is incredible — and when feeding isn’t going well, it’s not because it’s lacking magic ingredients.

It usually just means your baby needs more milk. And that’s a solvable issue — with the right support.
