I’m officially an IBCLC—Here’s what that means for you.
After years of hard work, study, and hands-on experience, I’m proud to share that I am now a board-certified International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)—the gold standard in lactation care. Becoming an IBCLC is no small feat, and I want to take a moment to share what that journey looked like and why it matters for the families I serve.
The Journey to IBCLC Certification
To sit for the IBCLC exam, I had to complete:
- 14 health sciences courses — including anatomy, physiology, nutrition, biology, and more.
- Over 110 hours of lactation-specific education — covering topics from human milk composition to complex breastfeeding challenges.
- Comprehensive training in communication and counseling skills — because lactation support is just as much about listening as it is about knowledge.
- More than 1,000 clinical hours — working directly with families under the supervision of experienced IBCLCs.
- Specialized training in areas like:
- Tongue tie and oral restrictions
- Oral motor assessment
- Therapeutic movement for breastfeeding
- Advanced clinical lactation care
There were also countless mentoring hours, case reviews, continuing education courses, and late nights with textbooks and webinars. Every step deepened my understanding of infant feeding and strengthened my commitment to helping families navigate their feeding journeys with evidence-based care and compassion.
Why IBCLC Matters
The IBCLC credential is the only internationally recognized certification in lactation. It requires rigorous training and ongoing education to ensure families are receiving safe, ethical, and effective support. When you work with an IBCLC, you’re working with someone who has met the highest standards in the field.
Whether you’re:
- Struggling with latching or supply
- Navigating pumping or bottle feeding
- Concerned about weight gain or oral restrictions
- Or just looking for reassurance and support
…I’m here to help you make informed, confident decisions that work for your family.
What’s Next
Now that I’m officially an IBCLC, I’m more equipped than ever to serve families across Middle Georgia and beyond through home visits, office visits in Sandersville, and telehealth consults. I’m also continuing to grow Nurturing Lactation Care by expanding insurance access and offering even more services in the months to come.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who supported me on this path—mentors, clients, colleagues, and friends. It’s a privilege to walk alongside families during one of the most meaningful (and sometimes challenging) seasons of life.
With gratitude and excitement,
Leia Giddens, IBCLC
